Biltmore Who's Who Selects Julia Hawkins as this weeks Honored Member of the Executive and Professional Registry for 2008.
Julia Hawkins, who earned her M.S. from the University of KY in 1998 and specializes in Career Development at Morehead State University. She has always been fascinated by how people make decisions. While she was studying psychology at the University of Michigan, she was curious as to why and how people, especially women, select their careers. She read an article that stated that fairy tales were bad for young girls because it pushed them into "female" roles where they are rescued by males, and she could not imagine that being true. She then investigated the correlation between choice of occupation and favorite childhood stories. This is what began her interest in helping people to develop their careers and explore their choices.
The primary goal of Julia Hawkins is to build a career center in Morehead, KY which partners with faculty, staff, and employers to help prepare graduates for the global workforce. Her personal aspiration includes leaving a legacy in which students will remember her staff and MSU. She enjoys using her professional training in the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator to train employees to work as teams.
Julia Hawkins is very proud to have been part of the team of professionals that researched and wrote a proposal for the Governor's Task Force on the Economic Status of Kentucky's Women. For the past few years, she has been practicing meditation and has become involved in building a labyrinth for First Christian Church in Morehead, KY. She believes that balance in life is very important. She belongs to a vast array of affiliations such as the National Association of Colleges and Employers, Kentucky Association of Colleges and Employers, National Career Development Association, and American Association of University Women.
In her spare time, Julia Hawkins enjoys writing and cooking, and is an avid reader. She even edited and published a book of her husband's poetry after he passed away and gave it to his children for Christmas.
