Biltmore Who's Who Selects Christy A. Owens as this week's Honored Member of the Executive and Professional Registry for 2009.

Christy A. Owens, an adult therapist for Family Violence Center, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Christy A. Owen's commitment to excellence in the field of healthcare.

Owens, whose most recent degree was a Master's of Social Work from Concordia University in 2003, has spent the last five years dedicating her career to therapy and counseling.

Starting out as a play therapist for abused children, Owens furthered her profession by working in mental health therapy, to help children and families who had been abused. "The empowerment I now can give them as a family violence therapist," she explains, "breaks the cycle of violence and builds one more strong family."

As an in-house therapist for adult females living in a family violence shelter, Owens helps her patients to feel good about themselves and empowered all over again. She works on trauma and post-traumatic stress problems, fears, and ways to improve their mental strength and abilities so that they can succeed in a new and different life style.

Prior to establishing herself as a counselor, Owens spent many years as a teacher, followed by time as a foster care case manager and adult educator for the department of corrections. She has studied the affects of abuse from all ages and both genders. She started a group for male batters and a support group for female victims as well, leading to the desire to serve in these professional areas, and help stop abuse and those victimized by it.

Ms. Owens is the 2003 and 2008 recipient of an Editor's Choice Award for poetry. She was a candidate for Teacher of the Year in 2003 and was also chosen as the Best of Poets for two years and as the ambassador of poetry for the state of Illinois in 2007. She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She hopes to continue doing freelance writing, writing poetry and someday publish her first book. In her spare time, Christy enjoys playing golf, scrapbooking, baking, and of course, reading and writing.
